After enduring 3 bankruptcies, it was time to begin doing things differently.
Fortunately, as I looked past chasing money, and doing what makes me happy. I found my passion.
Regenerative Agriculture.
Getting back on the horse, and moving full-time into this new career as a Regenerative Agriculture Consultant, it was time to start thinking about business differently.
One of the most important parts when planning properties, is the decision making process. Specifically, a concept called “Holistic Management“, from a gentleman called Allan Savory.
If you don’t know who he is check out the video below ->
Along with doing my “Holistic Context”, there was one more concept that has been immensely useful in this process.
The 8 Forms of Capitalism.
So what is capital?
Capital is a valuable resource of a particular kind or anything that can enhance a person’s power to work in economically useful ways.
Specifically there is.
1. Financial Capital
Current thinking is that capital is only “financial”
Eg: financial instruments & securities
2. Material Capital
Raw resources, stone, timber, fossil fuels, can be built up to tools, structures and infrastructure.
3. Living Capital
Plants, water, soil, organic matter, land. The principal asset.
With extractive industries, living capital decreases, and financial capital increases
Leads to -> Topsoil, living organisms, land, ecosystem services
4. Social Capital
Influence, connections and relationships. Webs of social equity and debt.
Leads to -> influence, relationships
5. Intellectual Capital
Ideas, concept, and knowledge. Held in the human mind and in material capital.
Leads to -> words, images, video, “intellectual property”
6. Experiential Capital
Embodied know-how, only can be done with personal experience and applying intellectual capital.
Intellectual and experiential capital are interlinked.
Leads to -> embodied experience, wisdom, neuro plasticity
7. Spiritual Capital
Karma, spiritual equity. This can mean many different things to different people. For me, this is music.
Leads to -> Spiritual Attainment
8. Cultural Capital
Shared external, and internal experience of a community.
Can only be created with a community. Often traded for individual capital.
Leads to -> Community
Thus, the next time you create a business plan, do not only think about what forms of capital you bring to the table, but what types of capital is the company looking to create?
